Nelson Green Gecko

Wow what a very lucky class we are!  Today Mandy (Tom's Mum) came to visit Room 8 and bought some very special visitors with her, two Nelson Green Gecko's.  Mandy has been looking after the gecko's and very kindly bought them to school to share with the children.  Mandy told us lots of interesting things about native New Zealand gecko's and about her special dog Puti who is trained to find gecko's!  We were able to carefully touch the gecko's bumpy, lumpy skin and to feel their claws on our skin which are specially designed for climbing trees.  We had so many questions to ask about gecko's that we could have had Mandy here all afternoon!  Thank you so much Mandy for a very special visit.

Wild, wet, windy weather.

What a terrible start to the week we have had weather wise, luckily we were able to use it to write some fantastic poetry about the rain.  Here is one we all wrote together....

Put on my pyjama's and listen to the rain
Tip tap
Lie in bed and listen to the rain
Drip drop
Relaxed, cosy, sleepy.

Magnetic Force

Room 8 have been learning about Magnets.  Today we learnt that magnets have an invisible magnetic force that attracts things to them.  We wondered if the force was strong enough to work through things like paper, glass, leaves, wood and plastic.  We did some experimenting to find out.  Miss B could make a metal tie stick to her ear by putting a magnet behind it, the magnetic force went through her ear lobe! Some of the things, like the table, were too thick for the force to remain very strong so the attraction was not great.  Here are some of the other experiments we did.

Welcome to school Loek

This week we welcomed Loek to the Room 8 team.  Loek and his family have come all the way from Botswana to New Zealand.  We learnt that Botswana is in Africa, that means that Loek has travelled from the other side of the world!  We are so happy  to have Loek as part of our class.

Welcome Cameron

This week we welcomed a super new classmate to the Room 8 whanau, his name is Cameron Wirihana. He has made a super start to working in Room 8 and we are so very pleased to welcome him to our school.

Hokey Pokey

Room 8 have been learning about how things change in science.  Today we experimented with making hokey pokey.  We mixed sugar (solid) and golden syrup (liquid) in a pan and heated it to dissolve the sugar and make the liquid mixture more viscous.  We added baking soda (solid) and watched it change colour and puff up.  We learnt that the baking soda mixed with the hot sugary mixture makes a gas which is why hokey pokey  has holes in it.  We ate the hokey pokey and it was delicious!

Agate

In the weekend Tom went with his family on a Rock and Mineral Club outing hunting for Agate at Nimmo Swamp. Tom brought some of the beautiful pieces of Agate they found too school to share with the children. We looked at the Agate, we touched it and we talked about what it reminded us of. We collected up all our descriptive language and used it to write a poem about our favourite piece of Agate.

Word cloud made with WordItOut

Here is our poem.

Agate
Coloured like coca-cola.
Shiny and sparkly.
Curved like a skateboard ramp.
Pointy like a mountain.
Sprinkled with flour.

The children have written their own poems about their favourite piece of Agate, come in and check them out.
